Working jointly with Ariane Group, Avio is developing the P120 C (Common) solid propellant motor. The new powerplant is derived from the first stage of the Vega Launcher P80. Like its predecessor, the structural casing is made of carbon fibre, which is built from pre-impregnated epoxy sheets through filament winding and automatic fabric deposition. It will have the capacity of 141 tons of solid propellant.
The new Vega C launcher will be more flexible and versatile than its predecessor, increasing the market for this vehicle from 50% to 90% of LEO satellites, a substantial part of which can be managed by exploiting its multiple launch capability. From this standpoint, the current VESPA Payload Adapter will be used in missions involving multiple launches (two satellites) or to house Cubesats and microsats in its internal platform.
Differently from Vega and Vega C Vega E will have a three stage configuration. The first two, P120 C and Zefiro 40 will be the same of Vega C. The upper stage will have a revolutionary engine which will burn liquid oxygen and methane. The rocket will be capable of releasing multiple satellites into different orbits during a single mission, maintaining the remarkable reliability and precision standards of the Vega family.
