Vega-c passes critical design review – maiden flight within the next 12 months
The European Space Agency, in its role as Launcher Qualification Authority, recently announced that “the Vega-C launch system passed its Critical Design Review and is now ready to complete manufacturing and final testing as part of the qualification phase”.
This Critical Design Review of the new launcher is a major milestone, covering all the elements of the Vega-C launch system, as well as integration activities for the launch base and launch range. Independent experts from ESA, national institutions and industries confirmed the consistency and maturity of the entire Vega-C launch system design, authorising the programme to enter the qualification phase for the inaugural flight planned within the first quarter of 2020. The Vega C maiden flight timing has been planned to also take into account the busy Vega flight schedule of 2019 and 2020 for several international customers.
“We are please to have successfully passed this very important milestone only 36 months after we started the Vega C development. We would to thank ESA for their support and drive during such intense and challenging development phase. Teaming with ESA is of fundamental value for the reliability and innovation of European Launchers. Now we are getting ready to satisfy Vega C customers expectations at best” commented Giulio Ranzo, Avio Chief Executive Officer.
