New propellant materials and processes

The tradition in engineering, chemistry, and energy materials at Avio and in our extended family (universities, research centres, technology partners), along with the widely recognized Italian creativity, has enabled us to carve out a niche of skills that are recognized globally.

For instance propulsion systems, where Avio is a leader in solid propulsion. We have developed motors loaded with just a few hundred grams up to 230 tonnes of propellant, with a commitment that ranges from propellants to “hot” and “cold” composite structures. The same goes for LOX/CH4 propulsion, where with MIRA Avio has developed one of the first cryogenic motors running on liquefied natural gas, in addition to attitude control motors, suitable even for very long space missions.

Avio focuses on the development of new materials and processes for the creation of propulsion system components and structures. We have developed a family of pre-impregnated carbon-epoxy composites for large structures of transport systems and patented a number of architectures of high-performance combustion chamber components to be produced using ALM (Additive Layer Manufacturing).
